A man enters a police station with a well-stuffed bag. To the duty officer’s amazement, he proceeds to unpack the bag on the counter, laying out a set of meticulous files, a scalpel, the remains of a bottle of chemicals and more. He then announces that he's there to surrender to justice as a murderer. The files demonstrate that he was involved with four recent homicides, and the other items offer supporting evidence. Taken into custody and interrogated, Lee Leung turns out to be anything but an 'ordinary' serial killer. He insists that he killed as the Herald of God. He explains his thinking: he watched his wife suffering great pain as she succumbed to leukemia, but was devastated when she took her own life to end her pain. His religious faith taught him that her suicide condemned her to eternal damnation: pain in the next life even worse than her pain in this life. Lee began to note reports of suicide in the papers and then stumbled upon a website which offered intending suicides mutual support and advice on methods of killing oneself. Filled with empathy and pity, he prayed to God for a way of helping the users of the site... and came to realize that he could do so by killing them. This would end their sufferings but spare them the fate of damnation, instead granting them a beautiful afterlife. He contacted four users of the website and began planning how to kill them. The case seems open-and-shut, but the police criminal psychologist assigned to it has nagging questions. He logs on to the website, investigates the back-stories of the four people who died, and orders his deputy to research the ownership of the site. Gradually, a different picture emerges. Was the site ultimately nothing more than a front for a man selling self-harm videos to vulnerable customers? And was the site hijacked by someone who knowingly manipulated Lee Leung into committing murders? If so, who was that person and why did he do it? Did the four victims really intend to kill themselves? The questions pile up. Why did Lee Leung surrender when he did? Was he a victim of conspiracy? How can anyone tell what is 'real' (and what is not) on the internet? And who carries the ultimate responsibility for the murders? The answers come as the story builds to a startling climax.
