About four hundred years ago, there was a little known island that China used as a penal colony. In time, Piao Dao (Floating Island), as it later was known, became a haven for traders and seafarers and a fiefdom of Master Hai, a learned strong man who famously refused to submit to the Ming government, angering the declining dynasty and earning himself and his men the epithet "The Hai Rebels." But Piao Dao thrived nonetheless, even attracting merchants and characters of all stripes from the mainland. As everywhere with a concentration of men and wealth, places to help them enjoy their successes naturally sprouted. Thus born the lively Flower Street, where the rich and the weary alike indulged fabulously in the pleasure of tenderness. Many of these transients never made it home and, instead, found their final resting place beneath the untamed soil of Piao Dao. Each year the islanders honored their memories by holding sacrificial rites on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month and the tradition, officially called the "Mid-Summer Fiesta," became one of the most important annual events. The highlight of the ceremony was a singing tribute by the best singing courtesans put forth from every brothel. Called "Singing Rites of the Courtesans," the girls soothed and comforted the displaced spirits with their magnificent voices. Along with the lustrous "Parade of the Courtesans," the ritual lit up the tiny paradise in the dark of the Pacific. But the good times came to an end when finally Ming soldiers wiped out The Hai Rebels and along with it the bustling port of trade. The distant memory of a penal colony devolved into a desolate leper's island. Legends has it that a frightful ghost ship filled with masked apparitions had commandeered the island as its anchorage and no one dare to step foot on it again.
